KONNECT ASEAN PROGRAMME

EASS 2023 - Bali

Extensive Assessment Summer School

‘Bumantara: Southeast Asian Futurism in Art and Design.’

EASS (External Assessment Summer School) is a summer programme that consists of lectures and workshops that provide practical skills, historical knowledge and theoretical frameworks that help cultural professionals analyse and navigate the broader ecologies that art and design practices are situated in.

Inspired by Southeast Asian polymaths, such as Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana (1908 - 1994, Indonesia) and Lim Chong Keat (b. 1930, Malaysia), whose work and intellectual contributions to the region have mobilised art and design as mediums of ‘forward thinking’ – tools for building the future, the 2023 edition of EASS focuses on ‘Southeast Asian Futurism’ as an idiom and as a framework for thinking about innovations and collaborations across art and design that have historically unfolded and continue to unfold in Indonesia and in Southeast Asia.

Through a programme that unfolds across Bali, Majalengka and Bandung, It brings together artists, architects, policy - makers, curators and cultural professionals from the region to consider Southeast Asian Futurism through this distinct history in Indonesia, contemporary sustainable practices in the face of rapid industrial development in Bali, Majalengka and through ITB’s new design programme.
